Secretary, Man Group plc Charitable Trust

We have made charitable donations consistently since the creation of the Group’s Charitable Trust in 1978. We have not made particular efforts to align our philanthropic endeavours with our businesses, but have supported a wide variety of charitable causes.

As our giving has increased, we have given considerable thought to the charitable areas we favour.

Our donations this year totalled $12,000,000 – a 103% increase year- on-year, and almost four times the figure for 2004-5. This is at least, in part, a consequence of our new more formal policy, which explicitly seeks to align our giving with the Group’s financial performance. As our ability to give increases, so too does the range and nature of the causes we support.

Our charitable giving is an important element in our Corporate Responsibility Programme. We live and work in various global communities; we feel it is therefore appropriate for us to play a proactive role in supporting those communities in practical ways, particularly where they face difficulties in supporting themselves. Though the process has become more formalised than previously, our primary motivation has remained the same. We are, first and foremost, a philanthropic Trust and any direct benefit accruing to the business is secondary and a bonus.

Having said which, we also believe that supporting our communities reinforces our relationships with our people, our markets, regulators, customers, intermediaries and other stakeholders – including of course the charitable sector itself.

While an account of our charitable activities appears in this Report, we have also published a ‘Community’ supplement describing our programmes in greater detail.
