Literacy

Write to Life
We continued our support to Write to Life, a project run by the Medical Foundation for the care of victims of torture, aimed at encouraging torture survivors to express themselves through creative writing.

Every Child a Reader
A donation of £1 million over three years was made to Every Child a Reader, a £10 million programme which aims to provide Reading Recovery teaching to 5,000 children, particularly those living in areas of high social deprivation.

Reading Recovery aims to identify and help children who, after a year of schooling, are struggling to learn to read and write. Every Child a Reader aims to both help such children directly and build the business case for sustainable, long-term government investment in early literacy intervention, in light of the attainable long-term savings in social care such early intervention can achieve.

The Chancellor confirmed in his pre-budget speech in autumn 2006 that the government will support national roll out for the programme from 2008, benefiting over 30,000 children a year by 2010/11.
