Man Group’s carbon programme for employees and their families

Looking at each of these in turn:

Workshops
These aim to help participants understand how they can help reduce CO2 emissions. To date, six have been piloted in London and two in Switzerland. They have been fully subscribed, and, to date, almost 200 of our people had attended. Subject to continuing positive feedback, the workshops will continue to be rolled out globally throughout Man Group.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and 64 of our people – 34% of participants – have now volunteered to become CO2 mentors in London and Switzerland; and 156 – 87% of participants – have requested regular updates on our carbon programme.

Climate change microsite
The site, accessible only via the Man intranet went live in June 2007. It includes a carbon calculator, designed to meet best practice, which enables users to establish their domestic CO2 footprint, energy efficiency tips, and a feedback mechanism.

Selecting offset projects
Of the total tonnage of carbon offsetting credits purchased, as described above, 2,000 tonnes have been put aside for the employee offset scheme.

Optional home eco audit
Man Group has piloted a home eco audit service from the charity Global Action Plan (GAP), which aims to give employees a complete report of their domestic and personal CO2 emissions, including their CO2 footprint, and offer recommendations on emissions reduction.

CO2 mentor programme
The CO2 mentoring programme aims to recruit mentors willing and able to help colleagues save CO2 at home and at work. The programme offers team meetings and an informational handbook, and offers guidance on taking measurements and receiving feedback. The programme, led by the Corporate Responsibility team and supported by a Carbon Reduction Group, is being developed with the help of external charity, Global Action Plan (GAP), with a view to rolling it out globally in the future.

Biodiversity link for children
To engage children in a non-frightening way, we have linked up with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) (www.rspb.org.uk) – a ‘child-friendly’ UK charity which is closely involved with climate change and biodiversity, has a global reach, and makes investments in environmental projects worldwide.

The RSPB has two club-based membership initiatives to encourage children to engage with the environment and carry out projects in the home and garden to support carbon efficiency and reduction, and to help maintain the environment.

Staff who opt for a home eco audit or offset their household carbon emissions receive three or six months’ free membership to the RSPB respectively.
