Linux Systems Administrator [3253]

A Linux Administrator is required to work as part of a business facing IT infrastructure delivery team. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to be part of a team where their actions and decisions will help move technology and the business forward as a partnership.  This position will report into the manager for this business aligned team and the individual must have worked in a similar banking environment. Our business is constantly moving so there is a need to be agile, innovative and be able to prioritise quickly. The ability to engage the business at the correct communication level is also important.  This is a very hands-on role, demanding a wide range of not only OS level skills, but application layer development/tuning.

Our team is involved in ensuring all business driven projects are delivered.  We engage with the business constantly to define their requirements.  We are involved in the design stage all the way through to handing projects over to “Production Services”.  As such the successful candidate needs to have a wide range of skills across the application and OS layers.  We are also responsible for maintaining/improving the development environment for our business area.  This involves technologies such as HPC, grids as well as engineering tools such as IDEs, source code management systems and testing tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Administration and setup of Linux environments (Red Hat) preferably in a front office/back office banking environment.
  • Support of existing UNIX development infrastructure (Linux, HP-UX and Solaris).
  • Administration of servers using Red Hat Satellite server.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest technology (hardware, software, GNU apps) in this arena, enabling  the business to try out the latest technology.
  • Installation and maintenance of UNIX and GNU tools/apps.
  • Point of contact for all business UNIX queries, faults and requests, to be managed via a call logging system.
  • Work with both database (Oracle/SQL), Microsoft and network internal and external professionals to identify and solve technology infrastructure issues that may span several of these IT disciplines.
  • Documenting the existing infrastructure and suggest improvements to this environment.
  • Cross training of existing team members.
  • Ensure operational excellence by handing over projects into production that are “fit for purpose”.
  • Working with the business users to improve performance and efficiency of their applications.
  • Design, build and implement new environments.

Requirements:

  • Strong and relevant technical skills and business experience gained in a financial environment (Investment Banking, Asset / Investment Management or  Hedge Fund).
  • Computer Science or Mathematics Degree – preferred but not essential.
  • Certified in administrating a Linux environment (Red Hat Certified Engineer).
  • Knowledge of HP DL Proliant hardware and HPCs.
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g. Perl, Bash, Python).
  • In-depth knowledge of UNIX (Linux, HP-UX and Solaris) operating systems  weighted towards Red Hat Linux.
  • Strong knowledge of analytic, mathematical packages such as Matlab, R and S-Plus.
  • Linux desktop experience (NX, Exceed, Gnome, XFCE) and knowledge of desktop environments in general.
  • Strong communication skills, quick and agile thinking, enthusiastic.
  • Parallel/Grid/HPC computing experience.  Exposure to Red Hat’s MRG product suite and grid scheduling software (e.g. Condor) useful.
  • Experience with development tools such as make, subversion and rpm, including creation of custom RPMs.
  • Monitoring tools, such as Nagios and HP Open View.
