I joined Man in 2001 as a Financial Engineer to structure products which used my mathematical and statistical skills to the full. It was my first job and I quickly realised that as Man wasn't like a typical investment bank I wasn't going to end up as another cog in the wheel.
From here I progressed into the portfolio rebalance side of the business and was soon responsible for a team of four portfolio analysts and the rebalance execution of all Man Global Strategies (MGS) investment decisions. In 2007 I felt I needed a new challenge and, after consulting with my managers, I moved into a new business management role.
As Head of Business Management I was responsible for a variety of projects from improving business and investment processes across MGS to any major change initiatives, reorganisations, recruitment, business plans and governance. Man then merged MGS and Glenwood to create the combined entity Man Glenwood within which my new role was Head of Business Strategy. I reported into the Man Glenwood COO and continued to have a varied role, concentrating on creating a robust and efficient organisation, process and governance structure. It was a challenging, responsible and varied job and I really enjoyed it.
In 2009 Man further merged the remaining core content engine RMF with Man Glenwood to create one leading investment management unit. In this outfit I took on the role of New Investments due diligence and risk assessment. This was an interesting role but after just 8 months I needed a greater challenge hence I moved to a corporate risk role, where I have been a Senior Risk Manager since November 2009 at the Group wide level.
My roles to date have always been focused at the investment management level of the business but this new role is an exciting change and insight into understanding firm wide risk management. The role requires me to work with all areas of the business to assess current and potential risks Man may face. I then work with the business to ensure we have controls in place to either mitigate or minimise these risks where possible. This role gives me a very wide remit in terms of approaching all business areas and discussing risk management with them, hence the strong network I have built up across Man over the last 9 years is invaluable and it's great to be able to work with such a variety of departments and individuals.
But it's not just the challenge that makes Man a great place to work. It sounds a cliché but the culture and colleagues really make it worthwhile. Everyone is down to earth and supportive and I've made some close friends here. It's fair to say that you need to work hard and be dedicated, but, as Man make sure you are always developing, you get out what you put in.
As long as I continue to grow with the business and keep adding to my knowledge, I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy coming into work for a very long time.
