Man first took on the sponsorship of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2002. Any full-length novel, written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland and published this year, is eligible for the prize. The novel must be an original work in English. The winner of the annual prize invariably sees an exponential increase in the sales of the winning novel and interest in the Prize is global.
In 2005 to reflect our increasing global footprint we launched a new prize, The Man Booker International Prize, to reward a body of work by an individual author. This prize is unique in the world of literature in that it can be won by a living author of any nationality, providing that his or her work is available in the English language. It is awarded every second year.
In 2007, and to build upon the success of our sponsorship of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, we launched The Man Asian Literary Prize. This is an annual award for an "Asian novel unpublished in English". The objectives behind this prize were: to bring exciting new Asian authors to the attention of the world literary community; to facilitate publishing and translation of Asian literature in and into English; and to highlight Asia's developing role in world literature.
